Go if

Stargazers and wildlife watchers who visit October through February will get the full payoff: genuinely dark skies near the astronomy pad, sandhill cranes, bison, and cool enough nights to actually sit outside.

Skip if

Summer visits without serious bug spray will be miserable after sunset, and the open prairie offers almost no natural shade, so campers who need trees or cell-free solitude should reconsider the timing, not the place.
