Lake Kissimmee State Park's Loop LK2 holds 60 campsites under a canopy of mature oaks and pines in Central Florida's cattle country. Each site has electric and water hookups, and the park's 20 miles of trails wind through 12 ecosystems, from scrub and prairie to the wetlands edging Lake Kissimmee and the Kissimmee River. Sites cost $5 per night and fill up fast. Reservations open 11 months ahead.
The park offers full-facility family campsites, glamping (Luxury Pioneer Tents), primitive backcountry and equestrian campsites, and a youth/group camping area.
Historical Significance
The park interprets 19th-century Florida cattle ranching with an 1876-era Cow Camp, living-history demonstrations, and programs celebrating the region's cattle-hunter (cracker) heritage.Weather and SeasonsSpring offers the best window. Mid-50s to low 60s at dawn, 75 to 88°F by afternoon. With lower humidity, active migration, wildflowers, and songbirds filling the morning air. Trails stay comfortable for long walks and bike rides; boats and fishing lines slip through calm water. Insects ease off compared to summer, though you'll want repellent near the lakeshore. Expect moderate crowds on spring-break and holiday weekends. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms, heavy humidity, and mosquitoes, but the wetlands pulse with frogs and fish. Winter and late fall are quiet and mild, good for campfires and long hikes without the sweat.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground sits in oak hammock threaded with palmetto understory, part of a 5,930-acre mosaic of pine flatwoods, oak scrub, prairie, and marsh. Trails cross all of it: sun-baked scrub with wide sky views, shaded flatwoods thick with palmettos, and open prairie where you can catch sunrise and sunset without a tree in the way. The lake itself and its fringing wetlands lie a short walk or drive from camp, where herons stalk the shallows and marsh grasses run to open water. Wildlife moves through: deer and wild turkey on the trails, armadillos rooting around camp, and enough bird activity that reviewers call it excellent for birding.
Geological RegionCentral Florida cattle country: flat terrain with pine flatwoods, oak hammock, scrub and marsh habitats surrounding Lake Kissimmee and the Kissimmee River watershed.
Scenic ViewsSites in LK2 are primarily wooded with views of mature trees, palmettos and screened neighboring sites; expansive lake and marsh views are available from nearby trails, the observation tower and lakeshore access rather than from most sites within the loop.
