Coin-operated showers (bring quarters) and a Stage 2 fire ban currently in effect mean no campfires at all, wood or charcoal. Sites can be tight and uneven, and swimmers will be disappointed since the reservoir prohibits it year-round.

Fall brings the best camping weather: daytime highs between 50-70°F, nights in the 30s and 40s, and excellent light for photography. Water levels drop after spring runoff, exposing shoreline coves good for fishing. Crowds thin after Labor Day. Summer afternoons see thunderstorms roll through the mountains. Winter offers ice fishing and snow activities under abundant sunshine, though some campground sections close. Mosquitoes are present during warmer months.

Trinidad Lake State Park offers a variety of amenities to cater to different camping needs. These include an amphitheater, biking trails, bird watching opportunities, a boat ramp, boating access, and camper services. There are comfort stations, a dump station, and firewood for purchase. Fishing is a popular activity with licenses available on-site, and there is a group campground and picnic area. Other facilities include hiking trails, interpretative programs, vault toilets, showers, laundry facilities, a visitor center, picnic tables, and electricity and water hookups in certain areas.
