McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area is one of BLM Colorado's most diverse desert recreation areas. Hikers will be stunned by the red-rock cliffs of Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness while the Ruby-Horsethief River Corridor offers Class I and II flatwater boating nearby. The area also offers mountain biking at Mack Ridge/Kokopelli and off-highway vehicle trails in Rabbit Valley. The Trail Through Time, adjacent to an active dinosaur quarry, provides visitors a chance to learn about fossils and paleontological finds in the area. Find outstanding hiking and horseback riding at Devil's Canyon and Pollock Bench trailheads off of Kingsview Road outside of Fruita. The area is home to mountain lions, desert bighorn sheep, elk, deer, eagles and collared lizards.

Fall offers the most comfortable combination of temperatures, stable weather, and low crowds — daytime highs typically run from the low 60s to mid-80s °F while nights cool into the 40s, making hiking and biking pleasant. Desert colors deepen, visibility is excellent for canyon and river views, and strong winds are usually less persistent than in spring; wildlife viewing and photography are at their peak. Expect fewer visitors than summer, but always check current BLM/park status (the site was at Peak months: October, September, April, May

The Knowles Overlook Campground offers basic amenities with a focus on scenic views and access to outdoor activities. It does not have water facilities or trash disposal, as reported by user reviews ("No water. No trash cans either."). Vault toilets are available and are maintained to an acceptable standard ("The vault toilets are reasonably well cared for; I've seen far worse."). Campsites are equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, providing the necessary infrastructure for campers. Cell phone service is reportedly available in the area, which is appreciated by several reviewers ("Great secluded campground with cell service.").
