Tucked away down a winding dirt road and under towering Jeffrey pine trees, the Hanna Flat campground offers an escape for visitors who want a more primitive camping experience that still offers many amenities. Despite being located only two miles off CA Highway 38, north of the town of Fawnskin, Hanna Flat provides campers with solitude, fresh pine-scented air, and cool star-filled nights.

This is a great campground for families, those who are new to camping, and hikers. With ample shade and an elevation near 7000 feet, the high temperatures in the summer rarely exceed 90° F, with nights dropping down into the 50° to 65° F range. Each campsite has 1 fire ring, picnic table and bear box.

Nearby, the moderate Hanna Flat trail leads hikers on a 7.8 mile roundtrip journey to the top of Gray's Peak. Within a mile and a half, hikers can pick up the PCT, near the Holcomb Creek crossing. Two to two and a half miles north of the campground on forest road 3N14 are three recreational target shooting areas. Approximately 5 miles away is the Big Pine Flat OHV staging area for green sticker vehicles and dirt bikes.

No Bicycles on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)!

The elevation is 7,200 ft. The campground is composed of three unnamed loops. The larger loop, and more open, is north of entrance. It is comprised of a Manzanita and wild rose understory and pleasant mix of Ponderosa and Jeffrey pines, oak and willow along a seasonal creek. Two smaller loops overlap and are better shaded by dense woods similar to the other loops but includes Douglas fir and more oak trees. Except where Manzanita grows, privacy is minimal between camp sites. This campground attracts familes of all sizes and ages. Firewood is available for a fee. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.
Open May 2 through October 26
The parking aprons are paved. An RV waste station, with potable water, is available at Serrano campground (Forest Service) - no fee (with Forest Service campground receipt).

Best season: summer. Summer is the best time to visit Hanna Flat because the campground and nearby lakes are fully accessible and daytime temperatures are comfortably warm (typically 65–85°F / 18–29°C) while nights stay crisp (40–55°F / 4–13°C). All activities — hiking, mountain biking, boating and early-evening wildlife viewing — are at their peak, and fish are active for dawn and dusk trips. Best conditions: 65–85°F days, full access and peak visitation; lake and trails active.
