Nestled between Blue Ridge and Cedar Roughs, east of the Napa Valley, Lake Berryessa offers year-round recreation opportunities. Lake Berryessa's water reaches temperatures of up to 75 degrees in the summer, making it an ideal place for water sports. Anglers enjoy fishing for both cold and warm water species, such as rainbow trout, bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill. The Bureau of Reclamation provides two large day use areas (Oak Shores and Smittle Creek), Capell Cove launch ramp, and many smaller dispersed day use areas. There are Recreation Areas around the lake that are managed by concessionaires under contract with Reclamation and provide camping, day use and boating facilities. Lake Berryessa is located 70 miles northeast of San Francisco and 40 miles west of Sacramento. Nearest towns are Napa to the southwest or Winters to the east. Nearest highways are state highways 121 and 128.

Summer offers the warmest, most reliably sunny weather and the best access to Lake Berryessa for swimming, boating, and paddle sports — daytime highs typically reach the upper 70s to high 80s (around 80–90°F) with cool nights near 60°F. Water temperatures and service levels are at their peak, boat ramps are fully staffed, and fishing is productive for bass and catfish. Expect higher crowds on weekends and holidays, so reserve a waterfront site early or visit midweek for a quieter experience. While the campground has water spigots located near most sites, several reviews mention issues with restroom cleanliness and the lack of showers. One user stated, 'No showers, maybe one bathroom was open for the whole campsite. It was great to camp, but lake swimming wasn’t ideal.' Another added, 'Porta-potties are clean the first night but by Sunday morning they were gross. Bring your own wipes.'
