Reservations are strongly recommended Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Jedediah Smith Redwoods Campground accommodates a range of camping styles with family campsites, hike or bike sites, cabins, and options for RVs and tents. Sites vary in privacy and proximity to the river.
The park is named for explorer Jedediah Strong Smith, who documented these forests in the early 1800s. The groves stand on the ancestral homeland of the Tolowa Dee-ni' people. Weather and SeasonsSummer brings daytime highs around 80-85°F with cool nights near 45°F. This is the warmest, driest period and the best time for swimming, boating, and fishing on the Smith River. It's also the busiest season. Winter temperatures range from 30-60°F, and the park receives up to 100 inches of annual rain between November and May. Mist weaves through the redwoods during wet months, creating a different kind of beauty but limiting some activities.
ElevationNestled in the heart of the coastal redwood belt at low elevation, the campground offers easy access and comfortable conditions year-round. This gentle terrain makes it ideal for families and adventurers of all abilities, while the proximity to sea level contributes to the mild climate and morning fog that nourishes these magnificent forests.
Natural Features and SceneryAncient coast redwoods tower hundreds of feet overhead, filtering light into green-tinted cathedral spaces. The Smith River flows nearby with crystal-clear water. The forest floor is thick with sword ferns, and trillium and Douglas iris bloom in season. Banana slugs leave silver trails across the paths. Deer move quietly through the understory. Some campsites sit close to the river in semi-circular configurations. Elevation is 269 feet.
Geological RegionDiscover one of Earth's most precious ecosystems at Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, home to some of the planet's last remaining old-growth coast redwood forests. These primeval groves thrive alongside the Smith River—California's only major undammed river system—creating an extraordinary preserve where time seems to stand still. This rare combination of ancient forest and wild river represents millions of years of geological history, offering visitors a glimpse into California's prehistoric past when these giants dominated the coastal landscape.
Scenic ViewsMany campsites offer views of the Smith River or are surrounded by majestic redwoods. Riverfront sites are particularly scenic, providing direct access to the water.
Lodging & AccommodationsThe campground includes four rental cabins, all ADA accessible, equipped with electricity, heaters, lights, and bear-proof outdoor storage.
