Context for the broader area surrounding Jedediah Smith Campground - Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, sourced from the federal Recreation.gov rec-area record.
Most people know Redwood as home to the tallest trees on Earth. But the parks also protect vast prairies, oak woodlands, wild rivers, and 40 miles of rugged coastline. People have lived in this verdant landscape since time immemorial. Together, the National Park Service and California State Parks are managing and restoring these lands for the inspiration, enjoyment, and education of all.
Redwood National and State Parks is located in northernmost coastal California - almost on the Oregon border. The parks are about 60-miles long, with four visitor centers from north to south. We are a six to seven-hour drive (325 miles) north of San Francisco, a six-hour drive (330 miles) south of Portland, OR and a four-hour drive (170 miles) west of Redding, CA.

Best season: summer. Summer offers the most reliable weather for exploring the redwood cathedral and the Smith River — expect daytime highs in the mid-60s to mid-70s and cool nights in the mid-50s, which are ideal for hiking, fishing, ranger programs, and campfire evenings. Long daylight and lower rainfall make river access and day hikes most enjoyable, though the river remains cold and can have strong currents so exercise caution when swimming. Summer is the busiest season (peak visitation in July–August), so plan/ Peak months: July, August, September, June
Summer is peak: mid-60s to mid-70s, long daylight, ranger programs and best access to activities.
