You want true island solitude, exceptional wildlife viewing, and are prepared for rugged, self-sufficient camping.
You need potable water, cell service, or easy access—this island requires a boat charter and serious planning.
Context for the broader area surrounding Santa Barbara Island, sourced from the federal Recreation.gov rec-area record.
Channel Islands National Park encompasses five remarkable islands and their ocean environment, preserving and protecting a wealth of natural and cultural resources. Isolation over thousands of years has created unique animals, plants, and archeological resources found nowhere else on Earth and helped preserve a place where visitors can experience coastal southern California as it once was.
While the mainland visitor center in Ventura is readily accessible by car or public transportation, the islands are only accessible by park concessionaire boats and planes or private boat. Advanced planning is highly recommended.

Best season: winter. Winter offers the most reliable combination of mild, dry weather and clear ocean visibility—air temperatures commonly hover in the mid-50s (about 56–58°F) and precipitation is minimal, making long days on the cliffs pleasant. Calm winter days bring excellent wildlife viewing (sea lions, seals and offshore whale migrations), rewarding hikes up to Signal Peak, and steady fishing and boating when landings are possible. Because the island is remote with limited visitor capacity, winter still feels w Peak months: January, February, December, October
Winter has the most reliable weather, mid-50s F, minimal precipitation and best visibility.
