Best season: spring. Spring brings the campground's signature draw: spectacular wildflower displays and fresh green grasslands with comfortable daytime temperatures (typically mid‑60s to low‑80s °F, nights in the 40s) that make long hikes and wildlife viewing pleasant. Trails, vernal pools and overlooks are at their most photogenic and animals — including ground‑nesting birds and tule elk — are active, so hiking and photography are at their peak. Spring is standout: wildflower blooms, green grass, active wildlife and peak visitor season.
The KCL Campground offers a rustic camping experience featuring 12 campsites, two of which are elevated and ADA compliant. Amenities include picnic tables, fire pits, horse corrals, and ADA-compliant vault toilets. However, the campground lacks electricity, drinking water, and garbage disposal services. Campers are required to pack out their waste. The campground is notable for its shade trees, a rarity within the Carrizo Plain National Monument. The site also contains remnants of the Kern County Land Company, including barn structures and corrals, though visitors are prohibited from entering the barns.
