Main Campground sits at the base of the Superstition Mountains in Arizona's Sonoran Desert, offering 135 sites with full hookups, partial hookups, and tent-only options. Most sites come with picnic tables and fire pits with adjustable grills. The park books up months in advance. Reservations open 365 days out.
Main Campground offers tent and RV sites (including 68 sites with electric and water) and three separate group camping areas. Cabins are available elsewhere in the park but are a separate facility.
Weather and SeasonsSpring delivers the best combination of comfortable hiking temperatures and dramatic desert wildflower displays. Expect daytime highs around 65–85°F and cool nights in the mid-40s to mid-50s°F. Trails hit peak scenery as blooms carpet the desert floor, and wildlife activity increases. Birding, desert mammals, active reptile sightings. Winter draws snowbirds, with comfortable days and chilly nights. Summer heat exceeds 110°F. Fall brings crisp evenings. Desert nights stay cool year-round, making campfires more than ambiance.
Natural Features and SceneryThe jagged Superstition Mountains rise directly from camp, catching first light at dawn and turning golden at sunset. Saguaros and palo verde trees dot the campground, with roadrunners darting between sites and hummingbirds zipping past throughout the day. Hawks circle overhead. Desert cottontails and coyotes appear for patient observers. At night, city lights from Apache Junction glow in the distance below the mountain silhouettes. Spring brings wildflowers to the washes and arroyo edges.
