From October to March each year, urban dwellers take advantage of cooler temperatures and enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, rock climbing and scenic driving throughout the surrounding Tonto National Forest. Campers awake to a scenic backdrop of rugged bluffs, saguaro cactus and desert skies. The campground is located directly across the historic Apache Trail from Tortilla Flat, Arizona, which has a general store and restaurant.</p>
The elevation is 1,800 ft. The campground is located along a ridge above Tortilla Creek (seasonal) off the Apache Trail Scenic Byway. All sites have water and sewer hookups and a wonderful view of mountain bluffs. Sites are delineated by a high cement curb or median in which vegetation (Palo Verde and Mesquite trees and desert plants) are growing. There are a number of interesting things to do from this campground: (1) Tonto National Monument - here one can view the 700-year-old pueblo- style cave dwellings of the prehistoric Salado people. It is located eight to ten miles south of the Roosevelt Dam on State Rt. 88 (toward Globe, AZ). (2) Apache Trail - the trail (which can be driven in a family sedan) had its beginnings centuries ago as an aboriginal highway through the Superstition Mountains. The drive along this road (State Rt. 88) has some spectacular views and is about 78 miles. It is an excellent one-day trip, which should NOT be driven with an RV. In the authors’ view, the best part of the drive is between Tortilla Flat and the Roosevelt Dam - about 25 miles. Consider stopping at the restaurant in Tortilla Flat. In other interesting items, almost every wall is lined with one dollar bills. (3) Roosevelt Dam (about 25 miles) - Dedicated in 1911, the 357-ft. high dam forms the Roosevelt and Apache Lakes.

The parking aprons are sand and gravel. Each site has a sewer hookup.
In Apache Junction, AZ, at the junction of Idaho Rd. and State Rt. 88, go east on Rt. 88 for 16.8 miles to campground sign (just before "town" of Tortilla Flats). Turn left at sign and go 0.2 miles to campground.

The Tortilla Campground, located in the Tonto National Forest, offers a variety of amenities that provide basic comfort and convenience for campers. "The campground is large yet compact, with campsites in close proximity of one another." Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a campfire ring with a cooking grate. Reviewers confirm that sewer and water hookups are available at individual sites, although electricity is not provided. A dump station is present on-site for RV waste disposal. The restrooms are accessible flush toilets described as clean but somewhat dated: "Restrooms were clean and well supplied. The toilets flush, and there are sinks with cold water for washing up." Cell phone reception is generally available, though it can be spotty depending on the provider. Finally, the Tortilla Flat market, restaurant, and post office are within walking distance, providing additional convenience.
