Pocket Campground sits in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest near LaFayette, Georgia, accessible from I-75 exit 320. This small U.S. Forest Service campground operates seasonally and offers tent and RV sites with flush and vault toilets, potable water, fire rings, and picnic tables. Campers come for the cold creek day-use area, on-site hiking trails, and nearby ridge overlooks, with no cell service ensuring a quiet, unplugged experience.
Developed single-loop campground with 26 sites suitable for tent camping and for trailers up to 28 feet; sites include paved parking spurs and gravel tent pads.
Weather and SeasonsBest season: fall. Fall delivers the most dramatic scenery here — the horseshoe ridges around Pocket Campground light up with crimson and gold and daytime temps are pleasantly cool (typically 55–75°F, nights around 40–50°F). Cooler, drier weather makes hiking the interpretive trails and ridge viewpoints far more comfortable, and fishing in Johns Creek and nearby Spring Branch is steady with clearer water. Expect moderate weekend crowds in October; weekdays are quiet and ideal for photography and wildlife viewing.
Peak months: October, November, September, May
Elevation889 ft above sea level
Natural Features and SceneryHorn and Mill Mountains curve around the campground in parallel horseshoe ridges, textbook examples of the folded rock layers that define the Ridge and Valley Province. Mixed pine and oak forests cover the slopes. Spring Branch, a cold mountain creek, runs through the recreation area and offers a popular day-use spot for cooling off. A small wildlife pond and food plots attract deer and turkey. The elevation sits at 889 feet, low enough to keep summers warm but high enough for genuine fall color.
Programs & ActivitiesAn interpretive trail with signs and numerous Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) remnants (foundations, drainage trenches, retaining walls, spring box) provide educational and historical interpretation opportunities.
