"Reviewers consistently highlight the campground’s spacious, convenient layout next to a visitor center and a popular trailhead, with clean restrooms, on-site water, and basic campsite amenities (food lockers, fire rings, picnic tables). Many praise the scenery — good stargazing, nearby creek, waterfall and geothermal features — while noting limited cell service and occasional noise or seasonal closures."

Best Time to Camp at Southwest Campground - Winter/Spring
The rhythm of the seasons dictates the camping experience here, with snow serving as nature's calendar. When winter's white mantle covers the landscape from roughly November to May, the walk-in tent sites slumber beneath the snow, and only self-contained vehicles can overnight in the parking area. As spring warmth melts the snowpack around June, the tent sites awaken for their active season, inviting campers to pitch their shelters under the stars until October's chill signals the return of winter.
Peak season June–Oct; early–mid July praised for comfortable temps, wildflowers, and few mosquitos.
Open through October; scenic fall access but fewer highlights than midsummer wildflower season.
Spring remains snow-affected; walk-in sites typically closed until snowmelt (approx June).
Walk-in tent sites generally closed roughly November–May due to snow.
Planning Tips
- Peak Season: June to October. Book 2-3 months ahead.
- Operating Season: Walk-in tent sites are generally closed when snow is present (approximately November to May) and are open when the snow melts (approximately June to October). When snow is present, overnight stays are only allowed in self-contained vehicles in the parking lot.
