You want primitive camping in a quiet National Park Service setting with good fall birding and hiking access.
You need hookups, running water, or a campground with more than basic facilities.
Context for the broader area surrounding Plum Creek Campgrounds, sourced from the federal Recreation.gov rec-area record.
Within the dry plains of the Texas Panhandle lies a hidden oasis, a haven where wildlife and people find relief from the dry grasslands above. Through this plain, the Canadian River has cut dramatic 200-foot canyons, or breaks, where humans lived many years ago. Lake Meredith occupies these hidden coves and is a haven for migratory birds and other wildlife.
There are several ways to arrive at Lake Meredith. If you are coming from Amarillo, exit Loop 335 North, then exit Hwy 136 North to Fritch, Texas. Headquarters is located at 419 E. Broadway in Fritch. If coming from the North, take FM 1913 from the Dumas Highway or FM 1913 from US 287. The Amarillo Airport is approximately 35 miles south of Lake Meredith, if traveling by air. Rental cars are available in Amarillo.

Best season: fall. Fall offers the best combination of comfortable weather and peak wildlife activity — daytime highs generally range from the mid-60s to high-70s°F with crisp nights in the 30s–50s°F, making hiking and birding pleasant. Cottonwoods and riparian vegetation take on warming tones and raptor/migratory bird movement is at its peak, so viewing and photography opportunities are excellent. Crowds are typically low to moderate (weekends busier), giving you plenty of solitude on trails while still enjoying Peak months: October, April, May, November Avoid: July, August
Fall described as most comfortable; cottonwoods color and raptor migration peak then.
"Plum Creek Campgrounds" is situated on the southwest side of Lake Meredith and features cottonwood tree coverage, making it a favorite for hiking, horseback riding, birding, and wildlife watching. Despite its natural appeal, it has limited amenities. There is no drinking water or flush toilets, but vault-evaporator toilets are available. Additional amenities include picnic tables, shade shelters, and grills. The lack of potable water and showers may make it less appealing for those seeking comfort. "This campground's rustic setup aligns with a more primitive outdoor experience."
