No potable water on-site and no camp host means cleanliness can slip fast. Reviewers have found trash-strewn sites and foul vault toilets during busy stretches, and poison oak crowds the path to the creek.

This campground offers excellent scenery. Although Steamboat Creek is closed to all fishing, summer visitors often see large steelhead trout attempting to jump the falls during their spawning runs. The campground is on the other side of Steamboat Creek from Steamboat Road. Towering fir trees shade the campsites, making it feel as if you are further away from the North Umpqua Highway. The trailhead for the 5.5-mile Mott segment of the North Umpqua Trail is about 6 miles southwest of the campground.

Facilities

7 campsites with picnic tables and fire pits

3 tent campsites with picnic tables and fire pits

No drinking water

Horseshoe pits

Baseball fields

Vault toilet

Garbage disposal

The elevation is 1,500 ft. The campground is a single loop through a stand of hemlock, Douglas fir, and a variety of deciduous trees. Deep Creek runs along one side of campground, while Steamboat Creek is on another stretch of the loop. Campsites along these two creeks are classified as tent-only. (Site 1 is on a point where the creeks come together and is wonderfully secluded.) Campsites with no views of a creek are good for both tenters and RVrs. Steamboat Creek and its tributaries are spawning grounds for Steelhead trout, which might be observed during summer months. Steamboat Falls, visible from campground, is a formidable barrier to the Steelhead. To compensate, a "fish ladder" was built to help them on their spawning run.

Late August through the September 20 closure offers the best conditions. Daytime highs run mid-50s to mid-60s, nights drop into the 30s and 40s. Trails are dry, wildlife is active, and you'll miss the summer crowds. Spring opens in April with temperatures between 40-60 degrees. Summer can bring wildfire smoke.
Fall visits are serene and less crowded, but campground closes Sept 20 limiting later-fall access.
