Aspen and riparian cottonwoods peak from mid‑September into October, making hiking and wildlife viewing especially rewarding, while fishing on the North Fork John Day remains excellent as insect activity wanes. Peavy Cabin provides a rustic and historic camping experience within the Baldy Unit of the North Fork John Day Wilderness. The cabin includes modern conveniences such as a gas stove and fridge, but excludes potable water, bedding, towels, and lighting. The amenities include a fireplace with a wood stove, a picnic table on the grounds, and a vault toilet nearby. Additional tent camping is permitted, and trash must be packed out. Guests can find potable water, phone service, fuel, and supplies approximately 15 miles away in Granite.
