The Baldhill Dam, Lake Ashtabula Project is located in eastern North Dakota, in the heart of the prairie pothole country. It is a multipurpose project, providing flood protection, augmenting water supplies during dry years, and offering wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities year-round. One of the unique seasonal wildlife visitors to the project is the white pelican, which can be seen in many areas around the lake.
Take the Valley City exit #292 from I-94, follow signs to county road 19, northeast about 12 miles.

Best season: fall. Visiting in fall — especially September — gives you cool, comfortable weather (daytime highs typically in the mid-50s to mid-70s °F, nights in the 40s–50s) and markedly fewer crowds than summer. This is peak time for wildlife viewing and migrating waterfowl around the prairie potholes, and fishing/hiking are especially pleasant with crisp air and early foliage color on the wooded slopes. Note that the campground accepts reservations only through September 30, so plan a September trip to enjoy a Peak months: September, July, June, August Avoid: October, November, December, January

East Ashtabula Crossing offers a range of amenities and recreational facilities to enhance the camping experience. Among its 38 campsites, 32 have electrical hookups. The campground features flush toilets, drinking water, a swimming beach, a playground, and a picnic shelter. Within walking distance are additional amenities such as a dump station, fishing pier, boat ramp, restaurant, and hiking trails. However, several user reviews highlighted issues such as unlevel campsites, and some noted that firewood must be purchased off-site. Cell service is reportedly poor, with some users describing it as 'nonexistent.' Trash bins are conveniently available throughout the campground, but garbage collection during busy weekends is a concern for some users.
