Go if

Families who want a float-trip base camp will find the boat ramp on the North Fork convenient, and the $18 single-site fee is hard to beat for this close to Glacier. Cutthroat trout fishing picks up once spring runoff settles in early July.

Skip if

The grassy understory means your neighbors are always visible, and there are no showers or flush toilets. If that combination bothers you, the 22-site layout offers nowhere to hide from either problem.

About the campground

The elevation is 3,300 ft. The campground is located along the North Fork of the Flathead River, a designated wild and scenic river. The understory is grassy providing minimum privacy between sites with many sites overlooking the river. The North Fork of the Flathead River is an excellent family float river. There is a free map, Open Road Map, available from the Hungry Horse Ranger District Office that, among other things, depicts "put-ins" and "put-outs" on the North Fork of the Flathead River. Big Creek empties into the North Fork of the Flathead River at the campground. The campground is 2.5 miles from the Camas Creek entrance to the Glacier National Park. The Big Creek Outdoor Education Center of The Glacier Institute is across the road from the campground. It provides "opportunities for children and adults to learn about the diverse natural and cultural resources of Glacier National Park and the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem." The Institute offers field seminars including guided hikes in the Glacier National Park. Although not all the seminars and hikes originate from the Big Creek Outdoor Education Center, some do. Check out their Website (www.digisys.net/glacinst) for information and schedule of events or telephone (406) 755-1211. For information on the area in general, check out the Columbia Falls Chamber of Commerce Website (www.montanaweb.com/cfalls) or telephone (406) 892-2072. Why camp at a National Park campground when there are National Forest campgrounds nearby? Devil Creek and Big Creek campgrounds are two examples of places to camp in the Flathead National Forest and visit the Glacier National Park too. Flathead National Forest 169
