Reserve your spot through recreation.gov</font color = "red"></b></p><p>Axolotl Cabin is located approximately 14 miles southwest of Ennis, Montana, in the foothills of the Gravelly Range. The cabin provides access to a variety of outdoor recreational activities and breathtaking views as it peers over the Madison Valley. The cabin is at an elevation of about 7,000 feet and is adjacent to Axolotl Lakes Wilderness Study Area. This picturesque land of numerous small lakes, grasslands, meadows, and forests offers excellent opportunities for horseback riding, hiking, fishing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, hunting and wildlife observation. From State Highway 287 between Virginia City and Ennis. Drive 1/4-mile east of mile marker 11 (or 3/4 of a mile west of mile marker 10); turn south into the paved parking area near the top of the hill. Pass through the gate with the cattle guard at the west end of the parking area. Proceed 3 miles on the two-track dirt road; the road will descend a steep hill and intersect with another road. Go left (east) 3/4 of a mile, and the cabin will be on the right hand (south) side of the road.

Summer offers the clearest access and the warmest, most comfortable conditions for everything Axolotl Cabin is best known for — daylong hikes to alpine lakes, boatable fishing on high mountain water, and long daylight for exploring the Gravelly Range. Expect daytime highs roughly 60–75°F and cool nights in the 30s–40s, with mostly sunny skies but occasional afternoon thunderstorms. Water activities, peak wildflower displays at higher elevations, and wildlife viewing are at their best while the 7 Peak months: July, August, June, September Avoid: November, December, January, February

Axolotl Cabin offers a unique and rustic camping experience with essential facilities catered to accommodate up to seven people. The cabin is equipped with a queen bed, a queen-size fold-out futon, and two single bunk beds (user reviews suggest that it comfortably sleeps 6 due to futon issues). Solar-powered lights and refrigerator provide modern conveniences, albeit with occasional outages, as noted by users. The cabin has a propane stove/oven, a BBQ grill, and a wood stove with an outside fire pit for cooking and heating. Non-potable water is available, which needs treatment. An accessible outhouse is conveniently located nearby. The cabin features a corral accommodating up to two horses. Guests must supply certified weed seed-free feed.
