Coneflower Group Campground sits on the Buffalo River under large cottonwood trees, surrounded by one of Minnesota's largest remnant tallgrass prairies. The group site provides picnic tables, a fire ring, and direct trail access to 12 miles of paths through prairie and floodplain forest. Buffalo River State Park protects more than 250 species of wildflowers and grasses, plus WPA-era structures from the 1930s.
Secondary sources describe a group campground with multiple tent or camper spots and nearby tent-only sites. The park contains a general campground and picnic area along the Buffalo River.
Weather and SeasonsSummer brings the warmest, driest conditions and full access to the swimming beach. Daytime highs reach the mid-70s to mid-80s F, with nighttime lows in the mid-50s to mid-60s F. Early summer wildflowers overlap with active prairie birds. Spring also delivers strong wildflower shows and amphibian activity, though cooler temperatures may limit swimming. Fall extends the wildflower season with fewer crowds. Reserve early for July and August weekends when the park sees moderate visitor numbers.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground occupies a grassy opening in the floodplain forest at 968 feet elevation, where the Buffalo River winds through oxbows and cut banks. Beyond the cottonwoods, the prairie stretches across former Glacial Lake Agassiz terrain, dotted with glacial boulders and prairie pothole wetlands. Cliff banks along the river offer overlooks of the water below, where white sucker, river redhorse, and goldeye swim. Bobolinks, greater prairie chickens, marbled godwits, and upland sandpipers nest in the grassland. Deer, beavers, mink, cliff swallows, and frogs are common. Wildflowers bloom in waves through spring and summer, and ridge-top trails provide long views of the prairie.
