Go if

Fall foliage hikers and tent campers who book midweek get the best of it: crisp 50s days, long ridge vistas, the 7.2-mile James E. Edmond loop, and shaded rhododendron sites without weekend crowds. Clayton is 10 minutes for resupply.

Skip if

Rigs over 30 feet will fight the narrow loops and short pull-ins. Site 37 is essentially overflow parking. Winter trips risk road closures from ice, and trails turn slick, so check conditions before committing.
