The elevation is 8,000 ft. The campground parallels County Rt. 96 with large, level open camp sites. All tent sites are walk-ins with a few nestled among Ponderosa pines on a hillside. South Platte River flows by on other side of Rt. 96. Benches along the river provide a pleasant place to sit and watch the anglers and wildlife. County Rt. 96 follows the track of the Colorado Midland Railroad, the first standard gauge line built through the Colorado Rockies. The drive along this route (Elevenmile Canyon) offers ever-changing views of the South Platte River, rock formations and multi-colored canyon walls. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.
Services provided May 17 through October 8

These sprawling forests and grasslands are an eight hour drive from boundary to boundary. This landscape offers a variety of ecosystems rich in history, geology, scenery, wildlife habitat and recreation opportunities.

The rolling prairies to the east are home to prairie chickens, wildflowers, paleontological resources and historical areas. The snow-capped Rockies to the west are a scenic backdrop to millions of residents and a draw to forest visitors. Best season: fall. Fall offers the best combination of crisp, clear weather and dramatic canyon color — expect daytime highs in the mid-40s to mid-60s°F and chilly nights that can dip below freezing. Cooler water temperatures bring excellent trout fishing and insect pressure drops, while cottonwoods and aspens along the river turn gold, ideal for photography and wildlife viewing. Crowds thin after Labor Day, so you get quieter trails and campsites without the summer bustle. Peak months: September, June, July, October Avoid: November, December, January, February
Fall cited as best: cooler days, fewer bugs, improved trout fishing and thinner crowds.
