47050 Generals Highway, Three Rivers, CA 93271, USA
You want a quiet, primitive experience in the Sequoia foothills with river access and uncrowded hiking.
You need developed amenities, guaranteed solitude from long-term campers, or prefer summer heat over spring conditions.
Context for the broader area surrounding South Fork Campground, sourced from the federal Recreation.gov rec-area record.
Huge mountains, rugged foothills, deep canyons, vast caverns, and the world’s largest trees exemplify the diversity of landscapes, life, and beauty here. Explore these pages to learn about the plants and animals here and the threats they face. Our ancient giant sequoias may seem invincible, but they, too are vulnerable.
Two highways enter the parks. Hwy 180 from Fresno leads east to Kings Canyon National Park, then continues 30 miles east to Cedar Grove. Hwy 198 from Visalia leads east to Sequoia National Park via Three Rivers. Inside the parks, Highway 198 becomes the Generals Highway, which connects 198 to 180. Vehicles over 22-feet long should enter the parks via Highway 180. In winter, the Generals Highway between the parks often closes. Chains may be required on park roads. No roads cross these parks east to west.

Best season: spring. Spring offers the best combination of comfortable temperatures (daytime highs typically in the mid-50s to mid-70s°F, nights in the 30s–40s°F), high water flows for dramatic river scenery, and lush wildflower displays—perfect for hiking and photography. Snowmelt swells the South Fork Kaweah, making cascades and swimming holes visually spectacular (but also faster and more hazardous), while crowds remain lower than peak summer weekends. Note: South Fork Campground is currently closed indefinitely Peak months: May, June, April Avoid: January, February, March, April
Though spring is normally best (ladybugs, wildflowers), site is currently closed due to damage.
South Fork Campground is a small, primitive camping site located in a remote area of the foothills along the South Fork of the Kaweah River. The campground is entirely closed due to extensive damage from winter storms, which left the access road impassable. Amenities are minimal and include vault toilets, year-round trash and recycling collection, and bear-resistant food storage lockers. There is no potable water on-site, and showers and firewood are unavailable. "No cell reception," according to authoritative sources, and no internet connectivity is provided. Trailers and RVs are not permitted due to the remote location and rough road conditions.
