Fall offers the best balance of mild daytime temperatures and cool nights (daytime highs typically 70–95°F / 21–35°C in October–November, nights 40–60°F / 4–16°C), making long hikes, geology viewing and soaking in the Saline Valley hot springs comfortable and safe. Trails, washes and primitive sites are easier to explore without the extreme summer heat, and the remote campground remains uncrowded except around holiday weekends. Saline Valley Campground (Primitive) is a clothing-optional hot spring area located approximately 35 miles from the nearest paved road. It is a primitive camping area, emphasizing minimal facilities. "This campground requires navigating rugged terrain, and a high-clearance vehicle with all-terrain tires is necessary. Four-wheel drive may also be required, particularly in bad weather or winter conditions." The campground is located at an elevation of 1,375 ft, and winter accessibility may be restricted due to snow or icy conditions on the passes leading to the site.
