Natural Features and SceneryThe campground occupies the head of the Placer River Valley at 157 feet elevation, where glacial meltwater begins its journey from Spencer Glacier Lake toward the sea. Spencer Glacier dominates the horizon. Icebergs drift across the lake's surface. A quarter-mile trail leads to a viewing area. The valley supports black bears, brown bears, moose, mountain goats, and occasionally wolves, lynx, or wolverines. Marmots and arctic ground squirrels are common. Cottonwood and alder have reclaimed land once buried under ice.
