We started bringing our own bathroom during COVID, when shared restrooms felt like a gamble, and never stopped. The rule now is simple: if a campground's bathrooms are far from the site or have a bad reputation, it comes along. At Lake Alpine West Shore our favourite site is a long, dark walk from the toilets, and we spent years talking ourselves out of water at dinner just to avoid that walk.

Here is the part nobody writes down: we only pee in it. That one rule is what keeps a portable toilet from becoming a portable problem, because liquid does not turn foul the way solid waste does. It stays manageable all weekend and dumping stays low-drama for the same reason. When someone truly cannot make the walk, we line the bowl with a WAG bag and it goes in the trash.
