The case for a rooftop tent is arriving late and staying one or two nights. When you pull into a site after dark, or you are only there for a night, the effort of pitching a ground tent is the thing that makes you not want to go at all. It does not get much easier than folding a rooftop tent open.
What you give up is floor space. It is genuinely roomier than a backpacking tent, but it cannot compete with a 10x14 canvas tent and it is not pretending to. That is the trade: setup time for square footage.
