<p>Welcome to Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland! Visitor opportunities abound on almost 2.9 million acres of National Forest System lands.</p> <p>The Medicine Bow and Routt National Forests provide year-round recreation opportunities for you. These activities include hiking, biking, camping, horseriding, OHV riding, fishing and hunting, just to name a few. Beautiful vistas await sightseers and photographers.</p> <p>The topography varies greatly within the national forests. Elevation ranges from 5,500 to 12,940 feet. The climate ranges from semi-arid at low elevations to colder and less arid in the high country. Frost may occur at any time, and visitors to the higher elevations should be prepared for harsh weather, including snow and high winds, even during the summer months.</p> <p>The Thunder Basin National Grassland provides unique opportunities for recreation, including hiking, sightseeing, hunting, and fishing. There are no developed campgrounds; however, dispersed camping is allowed. Elevation on the national grassland ranges from 3,600 to 5,200 feet, and the climate is semi-arid.</p> <p><strong><strong>The following recreation conditions report includes a sampling of our recreation sites. Best season: summer. Summer offers the best combination of reliable trail access, mild daytime temperatures, and long daylight for exploring Vedauwoo’s granite formations and beaver ponds; expect daytime highs around 60–75°F and cool nights from the mid-30s to mid-40s. This is peak season for hiking, scrambling, wildlife viewing, and stargazing, with most trails fully free of snow and dispersed sites readily reachable from I-80. Weekends and holiday periods draw more visitors (especially near popular formations), so Peak months: July, August, June, September Avoid: December, January, February
June–Aug offers reliable temps, cleared trails and peak access for hiking/climbing.
Vedauwoo Designated Dispersed Campsites offer a unique camping experience near I-80 in Wyoming, providing access to 97 designated dispersed sites. These sites accommodate tents and RVs, and group campsites are available for parties over eight people. Notable features include rock fire rings at each site and metal fire rings with grates at group sites. The area has no water, trash, or other basic services, and campers are required to pack out all trash and waste. Vault toilets are available at specific points, including the Nautilus Rock Trailhead and Forest Road 700D.
