Context for the broader area surrounding Belle Fourche River Campground, sourced from the federal Recreation.gov rec-area record.
The Tower is an astounding geologic feature that protrudes out of the prairie surrounding the Black Hills. It is considered sacred by Northern Plains Indians and indigenous people. Hundreds of parallel cracks make it one of the finest crack climbing areas in North America. Devils Tower entices us to learn more, explore more and define our place in the natural and cultural world.
The park entrance is located 33 miles northeast of Moorcroft, 27 miles northwest of Sundance, and 52 miles southwest of Belle Fourche, SD. Best season: fall. Fall offers the best balance of comfortable weather and spectacular scenery: daytime highs typically range from the upper 50s to low 70s°F in September with crisp nights dipping into the 30s–40s, ideal for day hikes and evening stargazing. Cottonwoods and prairie grasses take on golden hues that frame Devils Tower, and wildlife activity (deer, birds) remains high while summer crowds thin after Labor Day. Cooler, stable conditions also reduce afternoon thunderstorm risk, making it easier to enjoy Peak months: September, October, August, May Avoid: November, December, January, February
Fall noted as best: cooler temps, cottonwoods turn gold, quieter stays with same amenities.
