About Aldo Leopold House

Step into conservation history at this beautifully restored 1,300-square-foot Craftsman bungalow where legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold once lived and worked. Nestled in the Tres Piedras Ranger District just 30 minutes west of Taos, this full-amenity retreat sleeps eight and offers an authentic three-season escape into New Mexico's high country—complete with the solitude Leopold himself cherished, including limited cell service and a pack-in, pack-out approach to wilderness living.
A historic, full-amenity house rental (cabin/lodging) on a ranger-district compound; overnight camping (tent or RV) is not permitted.
Historical SignificanceIn 1912, a young Forest Supervisor named Aldo Leopold designed this charming bungalow he affectionately called 'Mi Casita'—my little house. Within these walls, surrounded by the wild landscapes he worked to protect, Leopold began developing the revolutionary ideas that would become his famous land ethic, forever changing how Americans think about conservation and our relationship with nature. Nearly a century later, Historicorps and the Carson National Forest breathed new life into the structure in 2005, preserving this birthplace of modern environmental philosophy for future generations to experience firsthand.

Natural Features and SceneryImagine sipping your morning coffee on the east-facing porch as sunrise illuminates Wheeler Peak and the Sangre de Cristo Range across the Rio Grande Gorge, the sage plains stretching endlessly before you. Behind the house, one of the iconic Tres Piedras granite outcrops rises dramatically, while whispering ponderosa pines frame views in every direction. This is the same inspiring landscape that sparked Leopold's profound insights about wilderness and humanity's place within it.
Geological RegionThe house occupies a unique transition zone where ancient granite monoliths meet high-desert sage country, perched on the western edge of the Rio Grande Rift with commanding views across the gorge to New Mexico's highest peaks in the Sangre de Cristo Range.
