An oasis in the desert, Amistad National Recreation Area consists of the US portion of the International Amistad Reservoir. Amistad, whose name comes from the Spanish word meaning friendship, is best known for excellent water-based recreation, camping, hiking, rock art viewing, and its rich cultural history. Amistad is also home to a wide variety of plant and animal life above and below the water.

Fall offers the best balance of comfortable weather and excellent on-water recreation — daytime highs typically sit in the 70s–80s °F with cool nights in the 50s, making hiking, boating and evening campfires very pleasant. Water levels and winds are often favorable for boating and fishing, while migratory birds and the warm light on the canyon walls create especially scenic views. Crowds are generally lighter than spring, so you get a quieter, more secluded experience at this primitive site. Peak months: October, November, March, April Avoid: July, August

Spur 406 Campground offers 6 primitive sites equipped with covered picnic tables and BBQ grills. Ground fires are prohibited. Vault toilets are the only sanitation facilities, and there is no shower, drinking water, or hookups available. Cell phone reception is available year-round, and trash collection is provided. Additional amenities such as firewood sales, laundry, and camp stores are not available. This is a limited development campground, and it is notable for its simplicity and rustic setting.
