An oasis in the desert, Amistad National Recreation Area consists of the US portion of the International Amistad Reservoir. Amistad, whose name comes from the Spanish word meaning friendship, is best known for excellent water-based recreation, camping, hiking, rock art viewing, and its rich cultural history. Amistad is also home to a wide variety of plant and animal life above and below the water.

Best season: fall. Fall offers the best balance of comfortable temperatures (typically daytime highs in the 70s–80s°F / 21–30°C and evenings cooling into the 50s–60s°F / 10–16°C), lower humidity, and excellent boating and fishing conditions on Lake Amistad. Water temperatures stay pleasant through early autumn so swimming, boating, and largemouth-bass fishing remain at their peak while the limestone cliffs and low-angle light create spectacular scenery. Crowd levels are generally moderate—busier on holiday weekend Peak months: October, November, April, May
Fall called the best season with comfortable temps and good conditions for water activities.
Governors Landing Campground offers year-round amenities including potable water (unique to this campground in the park), vault toilets, gills at each campsite, and picnic tables. However, it lacks hookups, showers, and an on-site dump station. There is no camp store, firewood for sale, or internet connectivity. Accessibility features include paved roads and gravel surfaces. Visitors highlight the great views of Lake Amistad, though many point out the sites are uneven, and noise from a nearby highway and train tracks can be disruptive.
