Fall weekends pull birders and anglers here for good reason: migratory waterfowl peak, mosquitoes thin out, temps stay comfortable, and the trout lake actually fishes well late season. Cottonwood area has the best pull-through sites for RVs.

Summer weekends are loud, crowded, and buggy enough to ruin the trip. Maintenance is genuinely rough in spots, rusted fire rings and cracked pads throughout, and a few reviewers flagged staff and fellow campers as less than welcoming. Caboose #5 has a cockroach reputation.

Fall brings the best conditions: daytime temperatures between 55-75°F, nights dropping to 35-50°F, and thinner crowds after Labor Day. Migratory waterfowl peak in fall, and the calmer water makes for better fishing and paddling. Summer (May-September) is warm and humid, busy on weekends, with mosquitoes at their worst. Winter sees below-freezing temperatures and snow, turning the park quiet. Spring warms up gradually but can be unpredictable. Bug spray is non-negotiable in warm months.
Fall recommended: thinner crowds, pleasant temps, migratory waterfowl and calmer water.
