A stock-focused campground with seven pull-through camping units and facilities for stock animals; supports day and overnight use and pack/stock activities with direct trail access.
Weather and SeasonsBest season: spring. Spring offers the best mix of dramatic river scenery and active water conditions: snowmelt typically raises the St. Joe to thrilling but manageable levels in May–early June while lower-elevation trails green up and wildflowers bloom. Expect daytime highs roughly 45–65°F and nights around 30–40°F; water temperatures remain cold, so boating and fishing are dynamic but require drysuits/layers. This is the peak time for whitewater boating, early-season trout fishing, and riding fresh spring trails —
Peak months: May, June, July, September
Avoid: December, January, February
Elevation3800 ft above sea level
Natural Features and SceneryThe St. Joe River runs directly past camp, carving through steep, forested mountainsides that define this stretch of Idaho's panhandle. A day-use area downstream features a small sandy beach and a quiet pool. Beyond the riverbank, the terrain rises sharply into dense forest. A large meadow opens up farther downstream. Non-motorized and multi-use trails branch out from camp into the surrounding backcountry.
Lodging & AccommodationsThree rental opportunities are noted in the area: Red Ives Ranger cabin, Beaver Creek A-frame, and Surveyors Lookout (nearby, not necessarily within the campground).
