The 18, 600 acres of water has a reputation as a great crappie and bass lake. Just 30 minutes from historical Hannibal, Mo (hometown of Mark Twain). Clarence Cannon Dam features a power plant display. The David C. Berti Shooting Range is located below the dam in the Warren G. See South Spillway. Northeast Missouri offers visitors an abundance of diverse recreational possibilities.

Fall offers the best combination of mild weather, dramatic hardwood color, and lower humidity — daytime highs typically range from about 50–70°F with crisp nights in the mid-30s to 50°F. Leaf color peaks in mid- to late-October, making hiking, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives around Mark Twain Lake especially rewarding; fishing and calm boating conditions are also excellent. The Indian Creek Campground, situated on the northern banks of Mark Twain Lake, is well-equipped with facilities to accommodate diverse camping preferences. The campground features 190 standard campsites and 20 primitive hike-in sites. The group camp area uniquely offers 25 electric campsites, a group shelter, restrooms, showers, and a playground.
