Fall is the best time to visit. Expect crisp mornings and daytime highs between 50-75°F from late September through October, when the oaks and hickories turn. Trails dry out, water activities are still comfortable, and weekend crowds thin compared to summer. Wildlife viewing picks up with deer and migrating songbirds, though deer hunting activity increases in autumn. Summer works well for water sports but brings heat and more campers. Spring can flood parts of the park.

Cross Timbers State Park offers a wide array of amenities including 19 full-utility sites, 50 water/electric utility sites, 8 electric utility sites, and 96 primitive camp sites. The park also includes four modern cabins, each featuring lake views. Amenities within the campground include basketball courts, boat ramps, comfort stations, hiking and biking trails, firewood for sale, an information center, playgrounds, organized swimming areas, and both pit and flush toilets. Potable water is available and kayaks with life jackets can be borrowed free of charge.
