Buzzard Roost Campground sits on sandstone bluffs above the Ohio River, where primitive sites look out toward Kentucky. The campground keeps amenities minimal. Vault toilets, fire rings, picnic tables. But compensates with a scenic overlook platform and direct trail access. You'll need to pack in your own water.
Rustic (primitive) camping with individual campsites that include fire rings and picnic tables and overlook sandstone bluffs and the Ohio River.
Weather and SeasonsBest season: fall. Fall offers the clearest skies, the coolest hiking weather, and peak hardwood color along the bluffline—expect crisp mornings in the 35–50°F range and comfortable daytime highs around 55–70°F. Trails and the scenic overlook are at their most photogenic as maples and oaks turn, and raptor and vulture migration can make wildlife viewing especially rewarding. Crowds are generally low to moderate on weekends, so you’ll have a good chance at quiet sunrise views over the misty Ohio River.
Peak months: October, September, November
Avoid: January, February

Natural Features and SceneryPaleozoic sandstone outcrops rise through mature hardwood forest at 669 feet elevation. The bluffs create natural ramparts along the ridgeline, carved over millennia into the dramatic formations that define the topography here. The main overlook platform has benches facing the Ohio River, where you can watch the water curve between Indiana and Kentucky. In fall, maples and oaks turn across the hillsides. Winter strips the canopy back to reveal the full sweep of the river valley.
