Oscar Scherer State Park Campground sits in a patch of Gulf Coast scrub and pine flatwoods near Osprey, about 15 miles south of Sarasota. The park protects freshwater wetlands, a swimming lake, and South Creek, a quiet paddling stream. Sites have electrical hookups, water, fire rings, and picnic tables. Campers base here for on-site trails, lake swimming, and short drives to Gulf beaches.
Campground offers sites for tents and RVs and has designated equestrian camping sites.
Weather and SeasonsFall through spring is the window most visitors aim for. Daytime highs run in the 60s and 70s, mornings are cool enough for hikes, and wildflowers color the scrub trails. Migratory birds pass through, and paddling and fishing conditions are reliable. Weekends and spring-break weeks fill up; weekday stays and early reservations help. Summer brings heat, humidity, afternoon thunderstorms, and more mosquitoes. The tree cover provides shade, and campers with air-conditioned RVs still use the park in the off-season when it's quieter. Be prepared to run your A/C and bring bug protection.
Natural Features and ScenerySlash pines and live oaks draped in Spanish moss create a canopy over one of Florida's few remaining scrub habitats. South Creek winds through palmetto thickets and pine flatwoods, offering paddling access and shade. The park's freshwater lake provides open-water swimming and views. Some sites back directly onto water. This is habitat for the threatened Florida scrub-jay. Gopher tortoises cross between sites, and otters and wading birds work the creek banks. Raccoons are active at night. The vegetation is thick enough to screen out surrounding development, even though the park sits in a built-up region.
