Go if

Organizing a group trip for paddlers or anglers in fall, when temperatures drop to the mid-60s-80s, crowds thin, and migratory waterfowl peak. Sites handle RVs up to 36 feet, flush toilets and showers are on-site, and Rio Vista is 3 miles away for resupply.

Skip if

Cell coverage is unreliable and there are no hot showers, just cold ones. The accessible fishing pier is currently closed from fire damage, and a harmful algae bloom advisory is active, so water contact for swimmers and pets carries real risk right now.

About Route 66 Historic Back Country Byway

Context for the broader area surrounding Sacramento Group Campground, sourced from the federal Recreation.gov rec-area record.

This 42-mile stretch of two-lane blacktop is one of the last and best-preserved segments of the original Route 66, one of America's first transcontinental highways. This portion of the highway once included one of the most fearsome obstacles for "flatland" travelers in the 1930's: the hairpin curves and steep grades of Sitgreaves Pass, which characterize Old Route 66 as it makes its way over the Black Mountains of western Arizona.

Directions

The Historic Route 66 National Back Country Byway begins five miles south of Kingman at the McConnico exit off Interstate 40. To begin at the southern end, exit off Interstate 40 at the Topock/Golden Shores. Switchbacks access Oatman and the mining community of Goldroad.
