About this campground

Nestled within the pristine wilderness of Modoc National Forest, Blue Lake Campground invites you to discover 47 spacious, thoughtfully arranged campsites cascading down a gentle hillside. Towering pines and majestic firs create a natural cathedral overhead, offering cool shade by day and framing starlit skies by night. Just steps from your tent or RV, the shimmering waters of Blue Lake beckon with promises of peaceful mornings spent fishing, scenic trails to explore, and endless opportunities to spot local wildlife going about their daily routines.
Blue Lake Campground accommodates tent camping and combined tent/RV sites. Primitive and group camping options are also available. There are no separate RV sites, cabin lodging, or glamping facilities.
Historical SignificanceThis resilient landscape tells a powerful story of nature's ability to heal and renew. The 2001 Blue Wildfire swept through these forests, leaving its mark on the terrain. Today, visitors witness an inspiring transformation as vibrant wildflowers carpet the meadows each spring, young trees stretch toward the sun, and native grasses wave in the breeze—a living testament to the forest's remarkable recovery and the enduring cycle of life in the wilderness.
Weather and SeasonsBlue Lake's mountain climate offers a delightful escape from summer heat, with warm days perfect for swimming and cool evenings ideal for campfire stories. While winter transforms the landscape into a snow-covered wonderland, the prime camping window stretches from mid-May through September, when wildflowers paint the meadows and the lake sparkles under endless blue skies. Pack layers—mountain weather loves to surprise visitors with its quick mood changes.
ElevationPerched at 6,000 feet above sea level, Blue Lake Campground offers the refreshing mountain air that makes every breath feel cleaner and every sunrise more spectacular. This elevation brings crisp, star-filled nights that call for cozy sleeping bags and morning coffee that tastes better with a view. The altitude creates perfect conditions for escaping summer heat while reminding visitors to stay hydrated and take it easy on their first day as they adjust to the thinner air.
Natural Features and SceneryA tapestry of emerald pines and stately firs shelters the campground, their branches whispering ancient forest secrets in the breeze. Come spring, neighboring meadows burst into a painter's palette of wildflowers, creating Instagram-worthy backdrops at every turn. The crown jewel remains Blue Lake itself—its crystal-clear waters living up to their name with depths of sapphire and turquoise that seem almost impossibly vivid. Every campsite enjoys easy walking access to this natural wonder, where morning mist dances across the surface and evening light transforms the water into liquid gold.
Geological RegionBlue Lake Campground claims its spectacular perch on the slopes of the Warner Mountain Range, where ancient geological forces carved out one of Northern California's most stunning alpine lakes. The crystalline waters of Blue Lake fill a natural basin surrounded by volcanic peaks and dense coniferous forests, creating a high-altitude oasis that feels worlds away from civilization. This unique mountain ecosystem supports a rich variety of plant and animal life, making every visit an opportunity to explore the fascinating intersection of geology, ecology, and natural beauty.
