Fall campers who want genuine solitude near a geologically odd, ecologically unique lake. The 4.2-mile Lakeshore Trail, alligators near the dam, and bald eagle sightings give wildlife watchers plenty to work with. Site 004 fits groups up to 35.
No showers and no water at sites are real barriers if you're car-camping with kids expecting standard comforts. Carry-in water for a group is a logistics puzzle. Summer bugs along the sandy trails are aggressive enough that several reviewers wished they'd stayed home until fall.

Fall delivers the most comfortable conditions, with October highs in the 60s to 75°F and crisp mornings. Humidity and bugs drop significantly compared to summer, making the sandy trails far more pleasant to hike. Water clarity remains good for boating and fishing, and migratory birds pass through while resident wildlife stays active. Crowds thin out after summer beach season. Late spring also offers comfortable temperatures, but summer brings heavy humidity and aggressive bugs. You'll need insect repellent from June through August. The heat and bugs are the tradeoff for warmer swimming conditions.

Lake Waccamaw State Park offers a range of basic facilities designed for a rustic camping experience. Amenities include fire rings, picnic tables, charcoal grills, and lantern hooks at campsites. The park has flush toilets near the parking lot, comfort stations, and pit toilets close to campsites. A water spigot is available, but there are no water hookups at sites. There is handicap access and telephone availability.
