Lakeside Campground sits on the shore of Lake Bronson reservoir in Minnesota's far northwest, where 4,300 acres of aspen-oak forest, prairie, and oak savanna meet flat farmland. The park is known for exceptionally dark skies for stargazing and a sandy swimming beach. It fills on busy weekends but stays quieter than metro-area parks the rest of summer.
The park has three drive-in campgrounds (over 150 sites) with a mix of electric and non-electric sites and a separate group camp on the south side of the lake.
Historical Significance
The Lake Bronson reservoir was constructed in 1936. The park preserves several WPA-era structures from that period, including Camp Bronson and a large stone water and observation tower. Pioneer cemeteries and other historic features are accessible by trail.Weather and SeasonsSummer brings warm water for swimming, often reaching the upper 60s to mid-70s F, and daytime highs around 75–85°F. It's the best time for boating, fishing, and evening stargazing under the dark skies. Spring and early summer paint the prairie edges with wildflowers while the aspen and oak canopy glows new-leaf green. Fall turns the aspens and oaks gold and copper, their colors doubling in the lake's reflection. Winter opens cross-country ski trails, though grooming is occasional and volunteer-based, so call ahead before packing skis.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground overlooks the Lake Bronson reservoir, built in 1936, surrounded by a rare mix of tallgrass prairie and aspen-oak woodland. Sandy beaches edge the water, some areas with sand fine enough to earn the nickname 'sugar sand.' Trails wind between ecosystems, opening onto prairie overlooks and wooded groves. Sunsets over the lake draw consistent praise from campers, and the lack of nearby light pollution makes for some of the darkest night skies in the state system. The WPA-era stone water tower, the tallest in Minnesota's state parks, offers long views across the reservoir and surrounding forest-prairie patchwork.
