Clubhouse Campground sits along the east arm of Lake Itasca in Minnesota's oldest state park, where towering pines and the Mississippi River Headwaters anchor 32,000 acres of forest and water. One-, two-, and three-bedroom log and stick-built cabins are available, along with traditional campsites. The park charges around $7 per vehicle (veterans with disabilities enter free).
Weather and SeasonsSummer delivers the warmest weather and fullest range of lake activities. Expect daytime highs around 65–80°F and long daylight for boating, swimming, canoeing, and fishing on Lake Itasca. Trails and old-growth pines are at their most inviting, wildflowers bloom, and the green canopy peaks. Cabins book quickly, so reserve early for holiday weekends. Mosquitoes thrive in the evenings. Fall brings excellent color and quieter trails, though water activities wind down. Canadian wildfire smoke can haze the skies in some summers, and busy Saturdays in July and August see moderate crowds at the Headwaters, though reviewers say the park never feels packed.
Natural Features and SceneryOld-growth white and red pines tower over the campground, some more than 200 years old. Lake Itasca stretches across the eastern horizon, its clear shallow waters fed by springs that form the official start of the Mississippi River. Wilderness Drive loops through unbroken forest canopy, with pull-offs for wildlife viewing. Trails wind through Preacher's Grove, where the largest surviving pines stand in cathedral-like quiet. Elevation hovers near 1,476 feet, high enough to keep the landscape rolling and well-drained. Wildflowers carpet the understory in summer, and fall color peaks in late September when maples and birch turn against the evergreen backdrop.
