Historical Significance
The park preserves one of Illinois’s larger remaining stands of native white pine and contains a CCC-era lodge and cabin complex (White Pines Lodge) reflecting early 20th-century park architecture and regional recreational history.Weather and SeasonsPlan your visit from late spring through fall when the campground truly comes alive with warm weather adventures. The park transforms with the seasons—spring brings fresh green canopies, summer offers cool forest shade, and autumn paints the hardwoods in brilliant colors. Winter visitors can enjoy day-use activities and cross-country skiing through snow-dusted pines, though overnight camping is limited. Note that soft ground conditions may close campgrounds in March and April, and the park closes during deer firearm seasons in November and early December for visitor safety.
