Discover 11 miles of winding river beauty at Kankakee River Campground, where the Kankakee River carves through 4,000 acres of diverse woodlands, wetlands, and open meadows. Whether you're seeking a full-hookup site at Potawatomi, a scenic electric spot at Chippewa, or a seasonal equestrian adventure, this river-valley retreat offers paddlers, anglers, and hikers a true escape into Illinois's natural corridor.
Multiple campground types: Potawatomi (Class A, full-service), Chippewa (Class BE, electric-only), plus equestrian and group/youth campgrounds. Equestrian camping is seasonal.
Weather and SeasonsWhile the campground welcomes visitors year-round, the river truly comes alive from late spring through fall when warmer weather opens up the full network of trails and water access. This is prime time for paddling the Kankakee's gentle currents, casting a line from the shore, or hiking through the woodland trails when wildflowers and wildlife are most active. Equestrian campers can saddle up from April 1 through October 31, when the seasonal horse camping area offers the perfect basecamp for exploring the property's bridle trails.
Natural Features and SceneryThe Kankakee River serves as your constant companion here, winding through a tapestry of habitats that shift from dense hardwood forests to tranquil wetland edges and sun-dappled clearings. As you explore the 4,000-acre property, you'll find yourself moving between ecosystems—one moment beneath a canopy of riverside trees, the next gazing across open grasslands toward the water. The river-valley topography creates ever-changing views, and the diverse landscape supports everything from songbirds in the woodlands to herons stalking the shallows, making each trail walk and paddle a new discovery.
