Rodman Campground sits on the shore of 9,500-acre Rodman Reservoir, 9 miles southwest of Palatka. The 67-site campground draws anglers and boaters with direct canal access and a reputation for excellent bass fishing. Sites are level gravel (except two paved ADA sites), well-spaced, and split between a canal-front loop with water views and interior sites backed by woods or open meadow.

Historical Significance

The campground and reservoir were created during the Cross Florida Barge Canal project, which began in 1964 with a groundbreaking attended by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The canal was never completed, leaving Rodman Reservoir as a permanent legacy of that ambitious mid-century infrastructure effort.

Best CampsitesSites in the 40s and up, especially the roughly ten canal-front sites on the water loop, are the most sought-after. These are large, angled so neighbors don't face each other, and offer shade trees with direct water views. Site 52 is noted for a very large "backyard" area backing onto nature with good privacy. Site 44 is spacious with a big shade tree, but has a humming electrical box near the picnic table. The two paved ADA sites sit adjacent to the bath house. Interior sites on the outer loop offer more privacy and wooded or meadow backdrops, but canal-loop campers face a steep walk up to the bath house.

Recreation at Paonia Reservoir is managed by the Colorado Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation under agreement with the Bureau of Reclamation. The reservoir is located in the shadow of Colorado majestic Ragged Mountains. The parks natural beauty is a perfect setting for nature lovers and photographers. There are picnic and 15 semi-primitive campsites available for your enjoyment. (Drinking water is not available.) Water level may fluctuate severely and prevent boat launching. Call 1-800-678-2267 for camping reservations.

Directions

From Glenwood Springs, Colorado, take Highway 82 south to town of Carbondale. Turn south into Carbondale on Highway 133 for 46 miles to the reservoir. From Delta, take Highway 92 east 21 miles to town of Hotchkiss. On the far side of Hotchkiss, keep left onto Highway 133, than past Paonia another 16 miles to reservoir.
