South Carlsbad State Beach occupies coastal bluffs above a three-mile stretch of Pacific shoreline, with 184 sites split between oceanfront and inland areas. Sites 1-72 and 156-225 face the water directly. Fees run $35-$50 per night. Reservations open six months out and fill fast during peak season.
Weather and SeasonsThe campground stays open year-round. Peak season runs March through November with a seven-night maximum stay, summer crowds, and warmer beach weather. Off-season December through February allows 14-night stays, emptier sites, and better whale-watching windows. Fall and winter also bring easier low-tide beach walking and a quieter atmosphere overall.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground sits on sandy bluffs ten feet above the Pacific, with shrubbery between sites and constant surf noise rising from below. Staircases and a ramp lead down to a long, sandy beach good for walking, swimming, and watching surfers. Oceanfront sites deliver unobstructed sunset views. Dolphins and whales pass offshore during migration seasons, visible from the bluff. The beach stretches far enough for low-tide walks in either direction.
