The clear water ofWakondaState Park's six lakes attract thousands of migratory waterfowl each year, making the park a bird lover’s paradise. Natural Features and SceneryWakonda State Park is built around a chain of former gravel pit lakes (including Wakonda, Boulder, Agate and others), now clear, fish‑filled lakes with gently sloping, sandy shorelines in largely flat northeast Missouri farm country. The Wakonda Lake Campground sits beside Wakonda Lake, with many sites having open views of the water and big sky rather than dense forest. Campers and reviewers describe the park as peaceful and scenic, with large sandy swimming beaches, calm water for paddling, and easy, mostly flat trails through grassland, scattered cottonwoods, and lakeshore habitat where turtles, migrating waterfowl, and other birds are commonly seen. Boulder Lake (a separate campground) is noted for more shade under mature cottonwoods and excellent bird and waterfowl viewing at sunrise and sunset.
