Best Time to Camp at Highlands Hammock State Park Campground

Winter and spring are peak season here for good reason: crisp mornings give way to comfortable afternoons perfect for hiking, biking, or simply relaxing in a camp chair with a good book. Summer tells a different story—expect daily thunderstorms that roll through like clockwork, higher humidity that makes the shaded hammocks especially appealing, and enough mosquitoes to remind you this is authentic wilderness. Come prepared with rain gear and insect repellent, and you'll still have an unforgettable experience when the park is quieter and the wildlife more active.

Planning Tips

About Highlands Hammock State Park Campground

Discover one of Florida's oldest state parks, where your campsite becomes a gateway to ancient cypress swamps and moss-draped hammocks that have stood for centuries. Choose from full-hookup sites with modern conveniences or primitive camping for a true backcountry experience, all within walking distance of historic CCC-built trails and boardwalks that reveal the real Florida.
The park offers a family (developed) campground with hookups, a primitive/wilderness drive‑to campground with picnic tables and fire rings but no electricity or running water, and primitive group camps for organized groups.
